The sestina is famously difficult and exacting. To settle on the six words that would scaffold the poem. To ease them into invention during the repetitions. To allow the circular narrative to perambulate around a theme or motif. To feel the strange comfort of the closure in the envoi, the final three lines that pull together all six words.

Authored by Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingdé, Sanctus Sanctus Dirgha Sanctus features a suite of sestinas through what the book calls “monostitches”. Each page presents a solitary line, undercutting the expected density of the sestina form. The effect is akin to walking the lengths of all the walls within a vast museum or art gallery, with the writing on the wall, so to speak.

The deconstructed sestina pulls the reader in, demanding greater attention to each constituent line. The individual sestinas placed in various poetry competitions. “The Object of White Noise” placed as runner-up in the Georgetown Review Magazine Contest. “Eunoia Eye to Eye” was a finalist for the Arts & Letters Rumi Prize For Poetry, as well as the Strokestown International Poetry Award.
